Introduction
Pozzo della Cava is one of the most fascinating sites of underground Orvieto: an underground archaeological complex that extends beneath the streets and buildings of the oldest part of the city’s medieval quarter. The route takes visitors on a true descent into the depths of the tuff rock, through caves, tunnels, Etruscan remains, medieval findings, ancient ceramic kilns, and the famous Pozzo della Cava, brought to light through extensive private restoration and enhancement work after centuries of abandonment.
Today the complex represents one of the most immersive cultural experiences in the Orvieto area, allowing visitors to freely and safely explore a unique archaeological heritage. Since 2023, Pozzo della Cava has also been included in the prestigious UNESCO World Network of Water Museums.
Alongside the archaeological route, the project also includes “La Bottega del Pozzo,” a space dedicated to a café, bookshop, workshops, and cultural events, as well as special initiatives such as the celebrated “Nativity Scene in the Well,” now in its 37th edition.
In such a unique context—both from a historical and technical perspective, as the site is entirely underground—the Pozzo della Cava team was looking for a solution capable of guiding visitors in a simple, flexible way that could adapt to the characteristics of the location and its routes.
What were the main difficulties before adopting amuseapp?
“Many visitors made rather hurried visits. Some arrived well-prepared and very interested, while others simply tended to pass through quickly without stopping to read the captions.”
The main challenge was therefore to increase engagement during the visit, helping visitors to experience it with greater attention and curiosity.
Added to this were some technical difficulties related to the structure of the site itself.
“Being completely underground, we have limitations related to connectivity. Not the entire route is wired, and Wi-Fi is only available in the entrance area.”
Why did you choose amuseapp?
“The versatility of the platform convinced us immediately. We liked the ability to add content, update it, and adapt it to events.”
A decisive element was precisely the flexibility of the system, particularly important for a cultural institution that organizes initiatives and events throughout the year. The Pozzo della Cava team was looking for a solution that was:
- easy to use
- easily updatable
- adaptable to new routes and content
- compatible with the technical characteristics of an underground space
Was it difficult to implement amuseapp?
“No, absolutely not.”
The implementation was perceived as simple and immediate, without any particular operational difficulties.
Are visitors satisfied?
Visitor feedback has been very positive overall.
“They complimented us.”
Which features did you find most useful?
Among the most appreciated aspects is above all the ability to easily update and expand content.
Pozzo della Cava is in fact planning new itineraries that connect the site to the surrounding area, creating a broader cultural experience integrated with Orvieto’s museum network.
“We would like to develop an itinerary that, starting from our site, guides visitors to discover what is around us.”
The future goal is to create shared routes with other cultural institutions in the area, integrating audio guides, in-depth content, and thematic materials.
How would you rate the support received from the amuseapp team?
“The support was efficient and prompt. You always reassured us when we had doubts or concerns.”
How would you describe amuseapp in one sentence?
“Easy, intuitive, and versatile.”
