Columbus House, located in the heart of Genoa’s medieval quarter, is an important exhibition space dedicated to the historical figure of Christopher Columbus. Nestled in a historical context of great value, near Porta Soprana, the Cloister of St. Andrew and the Barbarossa walls, this house-museum represents a cultural heritage that tells the story of the famous Genoese navigator.
The surrounding urban context has undergone many transformations over time, but the path leading to the Columbus House, through the vico Dritto di Ponticello, still offers a journey into the past, between the medieval Cloister of Sant’Andrea and the majestic Porta Soprana, the ancient entrance to medieval Genoa. The museum, run by the Solidarity and Work Cooperative., recounts the life of the young Columbus and the historical context in which he grew up, offering visitors an immersive experience in the history of the city and the great explorations.
What were the main difficulties your museum faced before adopting amuseapp?
Colombo House faces some structural difficulties being a small space that can accommodate few visitors at once. Before amuseapp, Lacked a guidebook illustrating not only the interior but also the context of the medieval quarter In which it is embedded. We needed to a more comprehensive solution that could improve the visitor experience overall.
Did you have other audioguide systems before amuseapp?
Before amuseapp, Casa Colombo offered visitors a self-produced audio guide covering only the building’s interior spaces and in four languages: Italian, English, French, and Spanish. Visitors often requested other languages such as German, Russian, and Portuguese.
Why did you choose amuseapp?
The deciding factors in the choice were many: what struck us immediately was the willingness of the team in meeting our needs and the professionalism of the company. We particularly appreciated the presence of a multidisciplinary team, composed not only of technical experts, but also of professionals with artistic and historical training. This allowed us to receive valuable advice on how to enhance our content, based on amuseapp’s experience with other cultural venues.
How has amuseapp helped improve the visitor experience at your museum?
Implementing amuseapp has enabled Columbus House to offer a richer and more engaging experience. Thanks to amuseapp, in addition to increasing the language offerings from four to seven languages, content that also illustrates the external context of the medieval quarter has been included. It also allowed us to introduce innovative features that greatly enriched the visitor experience:
- the chatbot multilingual that allows you to interact directly with Christopher Columbus “in person” by asking him any follow-up questions;
- theanimation of the portrait of Christopher Columbus talking to visitors made through deepfake technology;
- the possibility for those who pass nearby and see the poster with a qr code, to scan it and immediately access afree preview of the contents of the audio guide.

How has amuseapp made visiting more accessible?
The implementation of the web app version of the audioguide was a key step for us.
Some visitors were experiencing difficulties downloading the app due to poor connection inside the building, making the start of the visit less smooth. To solve this problem, we collaborated with the amuseapp team and implemented the web app version of the audio guide. Now, after purchasing a ticket, visitors can simply scan a QR code and immediately access the tour itinerary, without having to download any apps. This has made the experience faster and more accessible for everyone.
Are visitors satisfied with the audio guide and chatbot?
The feedback from visitors Has been very positive. The questionnaire built into the app provides us with valuable feedback, confirming some things we already know but also giving us new information, such as where our visitors are coming from.
We received particularly positive comments on interactive features such as the chatbot and portrait animation. These elements made the visit more engaging and memorable.
