A company of the Mondadori Group, Electa has been Italy's leading publisher in the field of visual culture for over eighty years, and one of the leading players in exhibition design in the country for more than twenty years: over 300 exhibitions held in the most prestigious museums and archaeological sites in Italy.
Electa's long-standing collaborations span the entire country: Palazzo Reale and Triennale in Milan, Scuderie del Quirinale, the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum and the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, among many others.
A permanent museum builds its audio guide once and keeps it running for years. Those who produce exhibitions work the opposite way: each project has a limited run, brand new content to build from scratch, a different audience and very tight setup times. All of this while managing installation, loans, catalogue, communication, ticketing and visitor services in parallel.
What was needed, then, was a solution that could be replicated exhibition after exhibition, quick to activate, cost effective even for large scale exhibitions and, above all, able to work independently without adding workload to teams already stretched across dozens of fronts.
Electa chose amuseapp for three major exhibitions at Palazzo Reale in Milan:
1. Metafisica / Metafisiche – 28 January – 21 June 2026 (closed just over a month ago)
2. Leonora Carrington – 20 September 2025 – 11 January 2026
3. Appiani. Il Neoclassicismo a Milano – 23 September 2025 – 11 January 2026
creating, for each one, visit itineraries in Italian and English.
Ludovica Vigevano, exhibition manager at Electa, told us about their experience.
What was the visit experience like before amuseapp?
"Before, there were more traditional audio guides, with a completely different management system, requiring radio guide devices to be handed out to visitors," Ludovica recalls.
The classic model involves a considerable organisational effort: devices to rent and hand out, a dedicated on site team for the entire duration of the exhibition, sanitising and recharging, handling breakdowns and losses. An effort that multiplies when more than one exhibition is open at the same time.
"With the web app, the process is much smoother and simpler, because visitors use their own phone and earphones directly," she continues. "This means that almost everyone now leans towards QR codes, moving past the more traditional audio guides."
Why did you choose amuseapp?
Three main reasons were decisive in the choice.
1. The price. "For us, the choice of price was decisive: we work on projects with a high economic impact and a high level of quality, which we always intend to maintain in the services we offer to the public too. With equal quality on offer, the price made the difference."
2. The autonomy of the amuseapp team. "Also, once the collaboration got underway, what we appreciated was your ability to work independently: for us it was very valuable to simply review the content, based on the materials we had provided, reworked into the web app by the amuseapp team."
3. Availability. "Availability: if there's a problem, you're there. Every time we needed to resolve a technical issue, the team responded quickly and efficiently."
A "turnkey" service for large scale projects
This is the point Ludovica emphasises most strongly, and the one that best explains what it means to work alongside those who produce exhibitions.
The working method agreed between Electa and amuseapp provides for taking on the entire operational workflow (building the itineraries, production, publishing, support), leaving the client to curate the content and carry out the final quality control. A model that makes it possible to activate the audio guide quickly, in line with the tight schedules of a temporary exhibition, and to replicate the process with the same efficiency on the next project.
How amuseapp improved the visit experience
For all three exhibitions, itineraries were created in Italian and English, accessible simply by scanning a QR code: no app to download, no device to hand over, no queue at the audio guide desk.
Visitors use their own phone and their own earphones, start listening whenever they want and proceed at their own pace. For audiences more used to traditional tools, initial guidance from on site staff still matters: a small intervention that noticeably increases the usage rate. On this front, amuseapp works constantly to make access as immediate as possible and to ensure it works even on older devices.
Reports: data that becomes decisions
For an organisation that produces several exhibitions a year, knowing your audience is strategic. amuseapp provides Electa with periodic reports gathering data on audio guide usage, visitor origins and languages, satisfaction levels and free text comments left during or at the end of the visit.
"It's very useful for us to receive these reports, another point in your favour," says Ludovica. "Knowing where visitors come from, the comments they leave, encourages us to improve the experience for future projects, according to visitors' needs."
How would you describe amuseapp in three words?
"Intuitive, complete and easy to use."
