MeBo Menabrea Botalla Museum, located on Via Eriberto Ramella Germanin in the center of Biella, is the first museum in Italy to host the history of two companies under the same roof. Established in 2019 thanks to the geographical proximity and friendship between Franco Thedy (Birra Menabrea) and Andrea Bonino (Botalla Formaggi), it represents a space rich in tradition and territorial identity.
The museum tells the story of Italy’s oldest active brewery and the dairy famous for creating Sbirro, our country’s first beer cheese. Developed across two floors, one part is dedicated to Botalla and the other to Menabrea, offering visitors a journey through Biella’s production tradition.

What were the main challenges your museum faced before using amuseapp?

“”Our museum lacked a customizable audio guide system. The system before amuseapp consisted of two fixed columns with speakers, distributed across the museum’s two floors. Visitors were forced to stand in front of the columns to listen to the audio content, which prevented them from moving around and exploring the ‘exhibition while listening to the’ explanatory audio.
The audio guides were available in only two languages, Italian and English, and lasted just 10 minutes for the ‘entire exhibition route. This limited the possibility of exploring content in depth and personalizing the’ experience.””

Why did you choose amuseapp?

“One of the first factors we considered was definitely the price. Often, implementing audio guide systems involves rather high costs, while amuseapp offered us an economically accessible solution.

“Another decisive element was the possibility of having audio guides available in many languages without additional costs: a significant advantage for a museum that welcomes international visitors. The activation timeline of the service also played a fundamental role: in about a week, maximum ten days, you delivered a system ready to use.
But perhaps the most important aspect was the ability to use the audio guides without necessarily having to download an app. We noticed that many people are reluctant to install new applications: they already have too much content on their devices, and any additional step can become an obstacle. With amuseapp, access is immediate and simple.”

How has amuseapp contributed to improving the visitor experience?

“The implementation of amuseapp has transformed the visitor experience at MeBo Museum. Visitors can now explore the museum independently, using their smartphones to access multilingual audio guides without having to remain stationary at fixed points.
We have also noticed that the feedback at the end of the self-guided tour is very positive. When people take the tour using the audio guides, we often receive compliments. We have perceived a higher level of satisfaction compared to before introducing the audio guides.”

Which features impressed you the most?

“Definitely the multiple languages and the ability to change the itinerary on the fly. Being able to easily make changes to the audio when we make changes – even if we just change the layout of the machinery display – and being able to modify the itinerary to be consistent with the space is an important added value.
If we had made a significant investment in traditional audio guides and they no longer made sense after a modification, we would have been limited in our structural improvements. With this possibility to make changes in amuseapp, this risk doesn’t exist.”

How would you rate the support received from the amuseapp team?

“The team is extremely professional, very helpful, present – without being intrusive. I would say the support has been excellent. The training received was adequate, and there was always availability if something wasn’t clear.”

Future Goals

The MeBo Museum is planning a significant expansion that includes enlarging the space dedicated to telling the stories of both Menabrea and Botalla, with a possible sensory stimulation path.
