Inside the legendary San Gottardo fortress, once "top secret," lies the Sasso San Gottardo Museum, in Ticino, on the border between Italian-speaking and German-speaking Switzerland. The cultural site is organized into two areas: the Exhibitions, which tell the legend of San Gottardo through the crystal cave, the chamber of wonders, the energy room, the Gottardo light show, and the world's only permanent exhibition dedicated to Goethe and his three journeys to San Gottardo; and the historic fortress, reachable via the Metro del Sasso, where the troop quarters, cannon emplacements, and ammunition depots are faithfully preserved, leading to the outdoor platform with its panoramic view.
The site operates during a very concentrated season, staying open only four and a half months a year, and welcomes visitors coming largely from the German-speaking area, since that is the closest country across the language border. With amuseapp, three visit routes have been created: a 120-minute tour through the ancient San Gottardo fortress, an outdoor themed itinerary, "Traveling with Goethe to San Gottardo," from Göschenen through the Schöllenen gorge to Andermatt, lasting 90 minutes, and the themed route "With Goethe at San Gottardo," from Andermatt to the San Gottardo Pass, lasting 240 minutes.
All three itineraries are available in four languages: English, German, French, and Italian.
What were the main challenges your cultural site faced before using amuseapp?
Before amuseapp, Sasso San Gottardo had already tried a first app, but with unsatisfactory results. "You had to download it and register, it wasn't suitable," recalls the museum's representative.
Having overcome this first obstacle, the team had worked for a year with a free solution, which however hid a serious problem: "Sometimes customers ended up in an ad without meaning to, because they thought they had to pay for something. Of course it wasn't us, it was the advertising." A disservice that pushed Sasso San Gottardo to look for a new solution, able to guarantee visitors a clean and reliable experience.
What were the essential requirements for the new solution?
The museum had identified three clear priorities: a solution easy for visitors to use, easy for the internal team to implement, and available in multiple languages. Today Sasso San Gottardo's audio guide works in four languages.
Why did you choose amuseapp?
Besides its simplicity, what convinced the team was the flexibility of the subscription model, available both by time and by usage, particularly suited to an operation that works with a seasonal opening of only four and a half months. "Many ask us to take an 18-month subscription, which doesn't work for us," explains the representative.
Another decisive factor was the attention to linguistic quality: since Sasso San Gottardo is located at the northern edge of Italian-speaking Switzerland, with most visitors and staff being German-speaking, the ability to guarantee carefully crafted Italian translations and to contribute directly to some German translations was seen as an important added value.
How has amuseapp improved the visit experience?
The feedback gathered has been very positive, especially at the start of the tour: "Everyone is super happy, they find their language, and off they go." Being able to immediately find content in their own language removes an important obstacle, especially for an audience that comes mostly from another language area.
Orientation within the site has also improved: many visitors ask for confirmation before heading into the gallery, and then set off with the app in complete autonomy along the route.
The amuseapp team's support
The support received during the activation phase was rated excellent: "When we weren't available, your response was always super fast." For the coming winter season, Sasso San Gottardo plans to further intensify collaboration with the amuseapp team, to explore aspects that so far it hasn't been possible to develop fully, such as usage data analysis.
A look to the future
Sasso San Gottardo doesn't yet consider the solution's potential fully exploited, but the overall assessment remains very positive both for the team and for visitors: "In my opinion we're not yet using it to its full potential, but we like it a lot, we're very happy, and so are our visitors."
How would you describe amuseapp in one sentence?
"A simple solution, with very simple, very effective processes, and great support."
