Discover how the Museo Sa Bassa Blanca in Mallorca has enriched its visitors' experience with amuseapp's audio tours.
The Museo Sa Bassa Blanca (MSBB) is a unique cultural space in Mallorca, where contemporary art, nature and architecture coexist in a 16-hectare park.
Founded by Yannick and Ben Jakober, the museum brings together several spaces and collections: the Aljub, a former cistern that houses the Nins Collection, with more than 150 portraits of children from European royal and noble families spanning the 16th to the 19th centuries; the SoKrates underground gallery; the Sculpture Park, with enormous animal sculptures set within nature; and the Main Building, designed by Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy.
Such a singular and diverse space calls for a visit experience able to guide the public through the discovery of the works and the different spaces, without limiting their freedom to explore the museum at their own pace.
What were the main challenges before using amuseapp?
"For us, the main difference is mainly in the rooms," explains Francisca Ossorio, Administrative Director of the Yannick and Ben Jakober Foundation, which manages the Museo Sa Bassa Blanca.
There was little information available for visitors in the rooms, and the museum needed to find a way to help them better understand the works and their context.
One of the most important needs was related to the Nins Collection, made up of numerous portraits of children from European royal and noble families.
"We were missing an audio guide so that visitors could understand what they were looking at."
Before amuseapp, the museum had tried using QR codes with informational content, but the solution had not worked as expected.
"We had tried a QR code, but people were not using it. We had the feeling they were looking at the works without really enjoying the experience and without knowing what they were seeing."
The museum had also previously had a traditional audio guide, but it had gone years without being updated and had become outdated. In addition, connectivity limitations had long made it difficult to bring in new digital solutions.
The arrival of fibre optics finally allowed the museum to take the step toward a new audio guide experience.
Why did you choose amuseapp?
The collaboration with amuseapp came about at a time when the museum had already identified the need for a new audio guide, but had not yet launched the project.
"The credit is yours. We had already talked about this need, but we still hadn't got down to it."
Contact with amuseapp allowed the museum to move up its plans and start the project earlier than expected.
"We did not wait for the moment we had planned for in the future. The credit was yours, or your marketing campaigns'."
An audio guide tailored to the museum
Together with amuseapp, the Museo Sa Bassa Blanca has created three audio tours, designed specifically for its main spaces:
Sala Nins, dedicated to the collection of historical children's portraits.
Sala SoKrates, dedicated to the underground gallery and its various collections.
Sculpture Park, dedicated to the large sculptures set within the natural surroundings.
The three tours are available in six languages:
Català · Deutsch · English · Español · Français · Italiano
The ability to offer content in several languages allows the museum to serve an international audience while maintaining an independent and flexible visit experience.
A simple rollout with close support
The launch of the audio guide was carried out jointly with the museum's team.
Francisca, who followed the project and the work carried out by her colleagues during the initial phase, particularly values how easy it was to collaborate with the amuseapp team.
"The feedback has been good. We perhaps have less time to devote to this type of project and sometimes took longer to respond, but everything went well. It was easy."
She also highlights the team's flexibility in adapting the content during the creation process.
"They handled all the changes we needed: new proposals, voice changes, accent changes... Everything worked very well."
How has amuseapp improved the visit experience?
One of the most obvious changes has been in how visitors use the audio guide.
Unlike the previous QR-code-based system, museum staff have observed that visitors actively use the new audio content.
"The staff in the rooms tell me people are following the audio guide. I have also seen people following the audio guide in the sculpture area, and they are happy."
For the museum, this represents significant added value. For this reason, the audio guide is currently offered to visitors free of charge.
"We believe it is added value that is worth offering."
More time to discover the museum
The introduction of the audio guide has also had an impact on how long visitors stay in the rooms.
In the outdoor areas, the visit has always been freer: visitors can stroll, stop, take photographs or even eat. In the rooms, however, the museum had noticed that visitors were staying for too short a time.
"Before, people used to come in and out very quickly. Now they stay a lot longer."
Some visitors follow the full content, while others listen to only part of it, but the result is the same: a more relaxed and in-depth visit.
"The length of the visit has increased enormously. That is precisely what we were interested in for the rooms: for visitors to enjoy the museum more and truly understand what these works are and why they are there."
The audio guide thus becomes a tool for showcasing the value not only of the individual works, but of the museum experience as a whole.
An experience in keeping with Sa Bassa Blanca's identity
The Museo Sa Bassa Blanca offers a very distinctive cultural proposal, difficult to compare to that of a traditional museum.
"It is a museum very different from anything else in Mallorca. I would even say in Spain. I don't know if that's for better or worse, but we are completely different, and we always surprise people."
The museum's goal is for visitors, once they arrive, to be able to enjoy a positive experience and discover the space at their own pace.
The audio guide fits perfectly with this philosophy: an additional service that accompanies the visitor without making the experience rigid or forcing them to follow a set route.
How would you describe amuseapp in one sentence?
When asked what she would recommend to another museum or cultural space interested in using amuseapp, Francisca is clear:
"Working with you has been very easy so far. The tool is very useful, the added value is excellent, and you have always made it easy for us. Of course, we will keep working with you, and I fully recommend it to any museum."
And, to sum up amuseapp in a single sentence:
"A tailor-made service with added value for the visitor."
