{"id":301760,"date":"2025-06-06T15:44:35","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T13:44:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amuseapp.art\/management-of-the-empty-museum\/"},"modified":"2025-06-06T15:44:35","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T13:44:35","slug":"management-of-the-empty-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amuseapp.art\/en\/management-of-the-empty-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Management of the empty museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Five things you can do to deal with the forced closure of your institution right away<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it was meant to be.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What many underestimated was actually the tip of an iceberg that ripped through our lives forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And today, two weeks after my <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/amuseapp.it\/il-cigno-nero-quando-limprobabile-scombussola-il-tuo-museo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I am even more convinced of one thing: we have not seen anything yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, the crisis that will follow will be worse than any we have seen to date: in fact, unlike the financial crisis of 2008, the current one is more complicated, unpredictable, and \u201cuncontrollable\u201d (when I am finishing revising the article, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the director of the World Health Organization<\/span><b> Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has just confirmed for COVID-19 the level of a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pandemic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Net of these considerations, the road not to take is that of despair and resignation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do in such a scenario?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must lay the foundation for the \u201csurvival\u201d of culture by rethinking the future immediately.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My grandmother used to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you don&#8217;t propose solutions, you are part of the problem.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, I decided to collect in this article, in a kind of symbolic letter addressed to those who run an institution, 5 useful tips in order to <\/span><b>proper management of the empty museum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don&#8217;t have to think then <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201chow\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you can do to follow these tips but think about \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how many\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of these operations you are still not doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus on the two or three functional ideas for your museum that, if implemented, will give you a huge advantage once you emerge from the crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s start.  <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. If you don&#8217;t have the numbers, you don&#8217;t know where to go<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In times of recession, turnover and cash levels always fall faster than expenditures.  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is why it is essential to do a thorough cost control immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand where (and how much) you can actually save, you must first start in<\/span><b>identifying the expenditures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> incurred during the year (correct would be to take a broader time frame for a more detailed report but let&#8217;s start with the last 12 months).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are unfamiliar with numbers, comparing with employees and contractors might help you by showing you where the main losses of time and\/or money occur in their respective areas (purchasing costs, vendor relations, and traditional communication costs are usually the most touted).  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key is not to get caught off guard: cut where you can now to avoid potentially more painful consequences in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Rethink the strategy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the time you have recovered with the empty facility to re-plan strategic activities for your museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order you must:  <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">check that there are no <\/span><b>marketing campaigns<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> active (it sounds trivial but you don&#8217;t know how many times I see sponsored posts of places and locations that are closed but keep running on my facebook wall); <\/span> <\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fix the <\/span><b>database<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  of contacts. How many visitors&#8217; emails (and cell phone numbers) would need to be dusted off and reused? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prepare the <\/span><b>content<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the whole online part (photos, blog articles, social posts, &#8230;) and for offline promotion (flyers, brochures, catalogs, newspaper releases, &#8230;)..;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do the <\/span><b>translations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">update the material for <\/span><b>teaching<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span> <\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">order the <\/span><b>priorities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Are there stopped projects that would be worth reactivating? Are there any active ones that would be worth reviving and revising instead?   <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The principle that should guide you is that of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSow now to reap later.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Innova<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two kinds of innovation: outward and inward.  <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outward  <\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The closure of the museum brings a new awareness: the need arises to <\/span><b>implement a part of first contact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with our visitor, from offline (normally in fact it takes place on site, inside the museum) to online, <\/span><b>in order to educate him<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offering as much information as possible (and thus acquire contact data of the same).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blogging, social, mailing, PR, automation, &#8230; are tactics that when put together, clearly coordinated, based on strong positioning and knowledge of audiences and competitors, ensure the success of the strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But don&#8217;t stop at that.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask yourself <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow can I replace the guided tour that I cannot currently offer?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many museums are these days competing in telling the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with videos and daily pills their collections. Ideal, however, would be to have available a   <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/amuseapp.it\/amuseapp\/\"><b>digital solution<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so that content can be entered in real time that the visitor will then find available.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inward  <\/span><\/i><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What you need to import is to create and adapt systems, from the simplest to the most complex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From <\/span><b>data in the cloud<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (to allow employees to access information and documents as if they were in a museum), to <\/span><b>email<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, through <\/span><b>communication between employees,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all the way to <\/span><b>tracking of work <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(tasks, project-hours, &#8230;). <\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will not go into specifics as the specialist in this area is my partner Marco. Work on your team<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there are no visitors in the museum why not take the opportunity to work with the team?  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use this time to do specific sessions of <\/span><b>internal training<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Try to think of how many areas would need updating:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methods of reception;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ways and routes of the guided tour;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">customer acquisition;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mode of sale;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">merchandise promotion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only that.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the University closed, many students will be at home. Is there a chance to \u201cwork\u201d with some of them? Why not coordinate him or her in the implementation of more operational work?  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show yourself to be proactive toward your team. You will need it during this stressful time. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Don&#8217;t complain  <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pardon my frankness, but I can&#8217;t stand people who complain all the time.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happened is now the past. The damage has been done.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not your fault.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling sorry for yourself because your museum had to close or because we are forced to stay indoors because of this unprecedented situation, <\/span><b>it won&#8217;t do any good<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sooner or later he will recover  <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would love to dissolve the Coronavirus and all its consequences by simply snapping my fingers like IronMan.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6950\" src=\"http:\/\/amuseapp.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Schermata-2020-03-14-alle-10.33.21.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1786\" height=\"998\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amuseapp.art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Schermata-2020-03-14-alle-10.33.21.png 1786w, https:\/\/amuseapp.art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Schermata-2020-03-14-alle-10.33.21-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/amuseapp.art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Schermata-2020-03-14-alle-10.33.21-1024x572.png 1024w, https:\/\/amuseapp.art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Schermata-2020-03-14-alle-10.33.21-768x429.png 768w, https:\/\/amuseapp.art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Schermata-2020-03-14-alle-10.33.21-1536x858.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1786px) 100vw, 1786px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it is not feasible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nor will these 5 tips decree with mathematical certainty your museum&#8217;s survival through this crisis.
