When the improbable disrupts your museum."},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How the real threat of a pandemic can help us change the view of cultures  <\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surely you have read or are familiar with the book \u201cThe Black Swan\u201d by <\/span><b>Nassim Nicholas Taleb<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, professor of uncertainty science, essayist, humanist and philosopher. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The origin of the title rests on the observation of the Latin poet <\/span><b>Juvenal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who referring to the fragility of systems disproved by something rare compares this phenomenon to a rare bird such as a black swan <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201crara avis in terris nigroque simillima cygno.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> . <\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, the Black Swan becomes a metaphor to describe an unforeseen event that has significant effects and is inappropriately rationalized in retrospect as predictable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But back to the present day.  <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Coronavirus the Black Swan \u201cexpected\u201d by the museum world?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the face of what is happening, the question I ask is: can the <\/span><b>COVID-19<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; as it has been classified-be the unexpected event that demolishes old, pre-consolidated patterns?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The statement I make is a strong one, but pay attention to it.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An epidemic that seemed contained, gone global, has disproportionate effects completely changing the context in which we live, blocking the market and our routines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The production chain is jammed, investment and consumption are curbed, and operators in all sectors tremble.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impact of the Coronavirus is also beginning to be felt heavily in the Italian tourism sector causing: <\/span> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The closing of museums, theaters, archaeological parks, abbeys and churches;  <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cancellation of public events and demonstrations;  <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the increase in cancellations of reservations made at facilities even in areas not considered at risk.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this is just the tip of the iceberg.  <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Was this a highly predictable situation? Can it still not be referred to as a Black Swan? <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I leave it to economics professors to express themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the priority is not so much to figure out \u201cwhether\u201d there will be a negative effect in the world of culture, but \u201chow\u201d hard it will be, how long it can last, and especially how to deal with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educate yourself before you educate<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When in 2019 I wrote the book <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ognimaledettomuseo.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every Damn Museum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I did so with the aim of popularizing a certain kind of entrepreneurial vision and, given the <a href=\"http:\/\/amuseapp.it\/il-tuo-museo-fara-la-fine-di-un-negozio-blockbuster\/\">high chances of closure <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of 81 percent of Italian institutions, to put the world of culture on notice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6832\" src=\"http:\/\/amuseapp.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/OMM_copertina_LINK.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1584\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amuseapp.art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/OMM_copertina_LINK.jpg 1584w, https:\/\/amuseapp.art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/OMM_copertina_LINK-300x75.jpg 300w, https:\/\/amuseapp.art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/OMM_copertina_LINK-768x192.jpg 768w, https:\/\/amuseapp.art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/OMM_copertina_LINK-1024x256.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1584px) 100vw, 1584px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent months, I have also been trying to make more and more directors, curators and public administrators, aware of the issue.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some understood this and were enthusiastic about my approach.  <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others, however, dismissed me by saying. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wonder why my museum must be smelling closure &#8230;\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latter are the same ones who in the last hours of emergency for the country have called me <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBird of ill omen.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But is it my fault that I used to preach that the whole system stood on outdated pillars that would never withstand an external shock?  <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The truth is only one in the end.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Black Swan when it comes surprises. <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It forces one to change one&#8217;s view of things, unhinges the certainties or prejudices of any kind of business. <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even for those in our museums.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This contingency must accelerate the awareness of cultural institutions that they are in the midst of a process of profound societal change, spurred by the need to evolve in order to survive, which will use new modes and languages, strongly influenced by the digital.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A strong acceleration of museum innovation is on the horizon, which will push to test and refine different uses of technologies to meet the modern tourist who will not necessarily be inside our facility.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we can do together is to better prepare the playing field by making room for a new way of thinking in a world that is radically changing.  <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How the real threat of a pandemic can help us change the view of cultures Surely you have read or are familiar with the book \u201cThe Black Swan\u201d by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, professor of uncertainty science, essayist, humanist and philosopher.
